SAILING IN CRETE
Sailing in Crete
No doubt, sailing is an amazing experience, even more so if you experience the crystal blue water of the Aegean and the Cretan Sea. Here's your chance to take the most of it, sailing along the north coast of Crete. From a day's trip to a full sailing course offering a Sailing Offshore Certificate, you can enjoy what suits you most.
The courses are ran by Makis Vasilakis, a state licensed offshore sailing Instructor, based in the Chania Offshore Sailing School. Since 1984 Makis has done 57 courses in Crete with 978 students so far. The training boat is a twelve meter offshore sailing boat equipped for training. The courses may run either in Rethimno or Chania.

ACQUAINTANCE WITH SAILING
This course lasts for five days and gives you a taste of this wonderful sport while you are enjoying your vacation. It includes 4 three-hour practice sessions, 4 three hour theory sessions and a day training trip.
Program:
- Day 1: PRACTICE 1 (3 hours), THEORY I (3 hours)
Anchors (types - advantages - disadvantages - gear - cable). Boat motors.
- Day 2: PRACTICE 2 (3 hours), THEORY II (3 hours)
Introduction. Wind - Waves - terminology. Basic aerodynamics. Cross sections -pressure - suction - sail forces - sail trim - apparent wind. Boat handling (tacking -gibing).
Sailing video tapes
- Day 3: PRACTICE 3 (3 hours), THEORY III (3 hours)
Boat safety. Equipment - man overboard procedures - at-sea emergencies - broken mast
fire - hull penetration - running aground - abandon ship - life raft procedures. Emergency signals.
- Day 4: PRACTICE 4 (3 hours), THEORY IV (3 hours)
Sail trim. - Survival. Hypothermia.

- Day 5: PRACTICE 5: TRAINING TRIP
PRACTICE PROGRAM
During the sessions of the practical program the following subjects will be covered:
-Getting familiar with the Boat. Terminology. Instrumentation. Safety gear.
- Marlinespike seamanship (knots...etc.)
- Sails handling (hosting - changing - reefing - stowage, etc.)
- Mooring. Helm practice. Steering by compass.

FULL COURSE
This "Sailors Certificate" course lasts two weeks; It includes 10 three-hour practice sessions, 10 three-hour theory sessions and a day training trip.
The subjects among others include: Boat safety gear. Equipment. Instrumentation. Man overboard procedures. At-sea emergencies: broken mast, fire, hull penetration, running aground, abandon ship, life raft procedures. Emergency signals. Wind, waves. Basic aerodynamics. Cross sections, pressure, suction, sail forces, sail trim, apparent wind. Sail trim. Boat handling (tacking -gibing). Anchors (types, advantages, disadvantages, gear, cable). Survival. Hypothermia. Marlinespike seamanship (knots...etc.)
Each practice group can have up to 8-9 people. Sailors' Certificates will be given to the trainees after examination.
Program:
- Day 1: PRACTICE 1 (3 hours), THEORY I (3 hours)
Introduction. sailing history . How sailing and races were born. Terminology. Types of sailing boats. Wind, wind rise, Beaufort scale. Waves, currents. Boat stability. Hull speed. Survival.
- Day 2: PRACTICE 2 (3 hours), THEORY II(3 hours)
Basic aerodynamics, hydrodynamics. Cross sections -pressure - suction - sail forces - sail trim - apparent wind. Boat handling (tacking -gibing).
- Day 3: PRACTICE 3 (3 hours), THEORY III (3 hours - previous lesson's continuation)
- Day 4: PRACTICE 4 (3 hours), THEORY IV(3 hours)
Coastal navigation. Compasses, magnetic variation, deviation, compass error. Courses, bearings. Latitude and Longitude Nautical miles, knots. Charts, projections. Lighthouses. Position lines, fixes, dead reckoning etc.
- Day 5: PRACTICE 5 (3 hours), THEORY V (3 hours - previous lesson's continuation)
- Day 6: PRACTICE 6 (3 hours), THEORY VI(3 hours)
Chart practice.
- Day 7: PRACTICE 7 (3 hours), THEORY VII(3 hours)

ONE DAY CRUISES
Sailing for the day is one of the most beautiful things you can do on an island. Whether you are an experiensed sailor or never have stepped your foot on a boat, you have to try this!!
Day cruises are always with a skipper and cost 300 €. You can sail along the north coast to beautiful beaches or the small islands near Chania.
